Surveys show that anywhere from two-thirds to three-quarters of all employers intend to have a hybrid workforce after the pandemic as part of their return to office plan. Employees would come in one to three days weekly to work on collaborative tasks with their teams. The rest of the time, they would work on their own tasks remotely. Many of these employers also intend to permit employees to work fully remote if the employees want to and can demonstrate a high level of productivity.

This article contends that we should replace “quality” with “value” to address an enormous array of previously unaddressed risks and opportunities. Poor quality is only one of the Toyota Production System’s seven wastes, and it is rarely the most costly one because it is also the only waste to draw attention followed by corrective and preventive action. The other wastes can hide in plain view for literally hundreds of years (as proven by brick laying) and are present 100 percent of the time as they are built into the job. Even the Toyota Production System’s seven wastes do not encompass all potential wastes.

It might even be instructive to say “value management” instead of “quality management,” and “value engineering” instead of “quality engineering.” The U.S. General Services Administration already defines value engineering as “... achieving essential functions at the lowest life cycle cost consistent with required performance, quality, reliability, and safety.” Investopedia defines value as the “ratio of function to cost.” This article will define it as the ratio of utility (i.e., what we can do with the product or service) to its overall cost.

(DMSC: Rochester, NY) -- Software company Elysium has announced support for QIF 3.0 (Quality Information Framework) in the latest product update of its 3DxSUITE EX9, available Aug. 1, 2021. This newest update offers primary support of QIF 3.0 with bi-directional translation and validation of the model-based definition (MBD) portion. Elysium also supports change detection within QIF, as with any supported format.

Elysium’s inquiries for QIF have grown the over the past couple of years and its level of QIF support continues to evolve, responding to increasing customer demand.

“The model-based enterprise (MBE) first-movers are increasing their MBE objectives from MBD visual aides to leveraging more from semantic information to achieve machine-readable workflows, which is where formats like QIF and STEP AP242 can add life cycle value for automation,” explains Annalise Suzuki, vice president of technology and engagement. “Based on the increased demand in this area, we are excited to add support for QIF 3.0 with continued collaboration from our innovative customers.”

Like it or not, work-from-home (WFH) is here to stay. This is not just a perk that employers might offer, but a requirement on which many employees, current and future, are demanding. According to several surveys, between 30 and 50 percent of employees surveyed said they would leave their jobs if they could not work remotely.

This pushback against return-to-work has left employers, those who were planning on full return-to-work for their employees, to quickly pivot and reconsider at least hybrid work for their workforce. Fortunately, several studies and employers’ own experience has shown that productivity has not flagged during the past year, and in many cases has soared. Coupled with the ability to get rid of expensive office space and its overhead, even those employers who were at first reluctant can feel a bit more confident with some amount of work-from-home.

But what will this look like as companies switch from “no choice” to “now we’ve got options” when it comes to remote work? According to Mike Morini, CEO of WorkForce Software, “As we transition back to the office, companies must consider how they can support their employees in the new modern workplace, including those they haven’t met yet, and create hybrid work success.”
