2020 Vision

Without question, 2019 has been a great year for all of us at the Coordinate Metrology Society.

First of all, we celebrated our 35th anniversary, and the 10th year of our Measurement Zone. Our annual event, CMSC 2019, was a huge success this summer in Orlando with great new programs, a fantastic lineup of technical paper presentations, and a pair of memorable feature speakers. We also rolled out new Level-Two Certification hands-on assessments covering traditional CMMs and scanners.

But if you thought 2019 was something, just wait until you experience our 2020 vision!

It all gets started with a new pricing structure that will allow you to come to our Conference and/or sit for Certification examinations and assessments for less money than before. It’s our way of giving back and encouraging more people to join our Society.

As a benefit of joining the CMS, you’ll also have the chance to test out our new 3DMU online video training at no cost for a limited time. Created in partnership with the team at Quality Digest, these short instructional videos presented by members of the CMS Education Committee will give you fast answers to your metrology questions anywhere, including on the shop floor. Technologies covered include traditional and portable CMMs, laser trackers, laser scanners, and the software and peripherals that make them all work.

The PrecisionPath Consortium is our newest committee, headed up by Ron Hicks of API and Ed Morse of the University of North Carolina–Charlotte. The mission of the PPC is to identify and prioritize the technology needs of the aerospace, defense, energy, and other industries that manufacture large-scale, high accuracy parts and products. The PPC Technology Roadmap, a 70-page document detailing all aspects of advanced manufacturing, is currently being updated, and a State of the Industry report is being prepared as well; both documents will be released this coming year. The PPC is a big part of the value that we deliver to industry.

Coming up soon is our call for papers, which is your “starting gun” to organize your cutting-edge metrology projects into a presentation suitable to be presented at CMSC 2020. Presenting papers at CMSC is a great way to get your work in front of fellow metrology professionals, both on-site at the conference as well as in our high-profile publications, the CMS World eNewsletter and the printed Journal of the CMSC.

Mark your calendars now for CMSC 2020, which will take place in one of the most entertaining cities in the United States, New Orleans! The event occurs at the luxurious Sheraton New Orleans from July 20–24. With even more new people, new technologies, new learning, and new experiences, CMSC 2020 is one event you won’t want to miss next year. I look forward to seeing you there!
