A recent article on the Bloomberg site quotes extensively from a Conference Board study about the shortage of blue-collar workers in industries such as manufacturing, hospitality, and food service. A big reason is that projected job losses from automation and outsourcing haven’t exactly materialized (yet), and unemployment is at multiple-decade lows.

This piece from the Quartz site asks us to reconsider our perspectives about talent acquisition and retention. Yes, an important part of the story is about millennials, those people early in their careers who can grow with a company. But what about “perennials”… older workers who have the experience and passion to make significant contributions as well?

“CMS Corner: Jana Barker of Fermilab”

Barker is a young geodesist—the branch of applied mathematics concerned with determining the exact positioning of objects. In her position she often works with the tools of metrology. Here, she shares with us the unique journey she took to her career, the importance of early educational opportunities and role models, and the meaning of the CMS in her career.

“Your Core Business? What Is it, Really?”

We wrapped up the show with this intriguing article from Jack Dunigan, which offers eight core actions to help you understand how to connect your sense of values with what you do for a living. It’s important to keep these things in mind so not to lose the sense of why you do what you do in running or working within a business.
