(CRC Press: Boca Raton, FL) -- Liberally illustrated with actual design examples, this second edition of Designing for Situation Awareness: An Approach to User-Centered Design, by Mica R. Endsley and Debra G. Jones (CRC Press, 2011) demonstrates how people acquire and interpret information and examines the factors that undermine this process.
The first edition successfully filled a significant gap in the market, presenting a core set of principles and a methodology for engineers and designers who are seeking to nourish the situation awareness of their system’s users. The second edition significantly expands and updates the examples throughout to include wider range of domains and increases the coverage of situation-awareness design principles and guidelines to include new areas of development. It translates current research into a usable, applicable method and guidelines.
Addressing the information gap between the plethora of disorganized, low-level data and what decision makers really need to know, Designing for Situation Awareness provides a successful, systematic methodology and 50 design principles for engineers and designers seeking to improve the situation awareness of their system’s users based on leading research on a wide range of relevant issues.
Mica Endsley, Ph.D., founder and president of SA Technologies, is recognized as a pioneer and world leader in the design, development, and evaluation of systems to support situation awareness and decision making, including the next generation of systems for aviation, air traffic control, medical, power, and military operations. Endsley speaks extensively at conferences, and she is the author of more than 200 scientific articles and reports on situation awareness, which are often cited in professional journals. Endsley has a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Southern California.
Debra G. Jones, Ph.D., is a principal research associate with SA Technologies. Her work is focused on designing large-scale and complex systems to support situation awareness and dynamic decision making, determining SA requirements in a variety of domains, and developing measures of SA for complex systems. Jones received her Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University.
