Stamatis breaks down the methodology from a historical perspective, explores the overall effectiveness of machines, and unveils novel methods that focus on design improvement—including hazard analysis, rate of change of failure (ROCOF) analysis, failure-rate finite element analysis (FEA), and the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). The book covers loss of effectiveness, new machinery, electrical maintenance issues, Weibull distribution, measurement techniques, and mechanical and electrical reliability.

Diomidis H. Stamatis, Ph.D., (aka Dean) president of Contemporary Consultants Co. in Southgate, Michigan, is a specialist in management consulting, organizational development, and quality science. He has served many industries, including steel, automotive, general manufacturing, tooling, electronics, plastics, food, pharmaceutical, chemical, printing, health care, and medical devices. Stamatis has created and implemented quality programs with a focus on total quality management, statistical process control, design of experiments, Six Sigma (the define, measure, analyze, improve, control process; and design for Six Sigma), quality function deployment, failure mode and effects analysis, value engineering, supplier certification, audits, reliability and maintainability, cost of quality, quality planning, project management, strategic planning, teams, leadership, benchmarking, customer service, and on quality standards including ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, and the TE 9000 series.
Currently, Stamatis is teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and operation management at Central Michigan University and the University of Phoenix. He has also taught project management, logistics, and mathematical modeling at the University of Michigan and the Florida Institute of Technology.
Stamatis received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Wayne State University, and his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. His doctorate in instructional technology and business/statistics is from Wayne State University.
