AMETEK Precitech Introduces New Freeform X, Small Footprint, Five-Axis Lathe

Smaller footprint, flexible configuration ideal for making advanced freeform optics and molds

Published: Monday, November 29, 2021 - 16:12

(AMETEK: Keene, NH) -- AMETEK Precitech, your global leader in precision diamond turning products, introduces the new Freeform X single point, diamond turning machine. The Freeform X, a five-axis ultra-precision diamond turning lathe, is based on the company’s highly successful Nanoform X and Freeform platforms.

The Freeform X has all the power of a large five-axis lathe in a much smaller footprint, making it ideal for facilities in which space is at a premium. The Freeform X is used to machine advanced substrates like:
• High quality infrared materials for defense and security
• Beam directing optics for EUV semiconductor applications
• Consumer products such as the complex surfaces integrated into new generation reality-based headwear and mobile devices
• Lighting and heads-up displays (HUD) for the automotive sector

Freeform X

“The Freeform X is the ideal machine for making advanced freeform optics, like those found in new wearable devices,” says Dan Musinski, Division Vice President of Strategic Business Development for AMETEK’s Ultra Precision Technologies. “Customers making aspheric devices value the accuracy and throughput they can achieve with our advanced Fast Tool Servo technology combined with a smaller, stiffer structural loop found in the Freeform X.”

The Freeform X was introduced at SPIE Optifab 2021 in Rochester, N.Y. It has five operational axes that facilitate a high-level of machining flexibility with 200 millimeters of X- and Z-axis travel and 100 millimeters of translation in the Y direction. When integrated with Precitech’s proprietary Fast Tool Servo, the FTS5000, and the feature rich FastCAM software, the system provides additional capabilities for increasing productivity with up to 15 times faster processing times for the manufacture of standard and complex shapes with excellent surface quality.
