Eva 3D Scanner Captures Subtle Changes in Object

Scans 288,00 data points per second without markers, EM tracking, or calibration

Published: Friday, June 29, 2012 - 16:31

(Exact Metrology: Cincinnati) -- For years, engineers have anticipated the day when a full-color 3-D scanner can be picked up, plugged into a laptop computer, and ready to use. The Eva 3D Scanner from Artec now offers this.

Because Eva eliminates any need for marking or calibration, you’ve got a lightweight, portable 3-D scanning solution in the palm of your hand that can capture high-quality data in real time, at up to 16 frames every second or 300,000 points of data. This kind of instantaneous frame alignment has exciting applications for industries such as:
• Reverse engineering
• Design
• Heritage preservation
• Medical and biomechanical research

Beyond its remarkable speed and accuracy, the Artec scanner can capture motion in 3-D. The part and scanner move simultaneously, so there’s no need to position it on one  stationary place to get exceptional motion capture. With its ergonomic design and available battery, Eva can be operated in a variety of remote environments.

How else is Eva evolving 3-D?

Eva doesn’t even view the world in the same way as a traditional 3-D scanner does. While a traditional 3-D device will scan an image as separate slices and then reassemble the object, Artec’s Eva model will project a calibrated grid onto the object. As the grid’s squares bend, a camera simultaneously captures 200,000 color pixels every fifteenth of a second.

Consequently, Eva can pick up on the slightest of distortions to capture subtle changes in shape, shading, texture, and depth, such as a wrinkle in an article of clothing or an object that’s affected by different light sources.

Artec has delivered a scanner that Exact Metrology is already using on a variety of 3-D projects to fully factor in all the elements of the object’s environment. It also allows full editing and data exporting.
